Mitsubishi Outlander RE Facelift (2016-Present) Expert Review
9 March 2018
Overall Rating
For a price tag that is just south of RM140,000, the Mitsubishi Outlander 2.0L 4WD is a safe bet if you're looking for a capable SUV that delivers on its promise of providing seating for up to seven people. The all-wheel drive system is an added level of assurance while behind wheel, although the decently-equipped interior does appear a little dated.
Performance
The 2.0 litre engine is capable enough to get the Outlander moving, and is pretty refined when cruising on the highway. However, it can sound a little strained when pushed, accompanied by the rubber banding effect due to the CVT. The all-wheel drive system provides an added level of assurance in low-grip situations.
Ride & Handling
Despite being fitted with 18-inch wheels, the Outlander 2.0L 4WD delivers an impressive ride that is comfortable for all occupants. Handling is decent, although there is some body roll to deal with when tackling more demanding corners.
Comfort
Refinement is pretty good up to highway speed limits, whereby beyond that, road and wind noise start to become more apparent. The fabric seats, while not leather, are supportive and add to the comfort of the ride.
Safety
Mitsubishi didn't skimp in this aspect, providing the most affordable Outlander with the same kit as the most expensive one. With seven airbags, Active Stability Control, Traction Control, Hill Start Assist, Rest Reminder, wide-angle dashcam (170-degree view) and security safety film for all windows, you're very well covered.
Space
Interior space is more than enough for seven people, although those in the third row might find things to be a bit of a squeeze. Second-row legroom is plenty, and with all seats (except the front ones) folded down, there's a class-leading 1,608 litres of storage space.
Value
For a seven-seat SUV, the base Outlander is pretty decent, offering a comprehensive suite of safety kit, automatic climate control and an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay support, all bundled into a practical package. However, the affordability comes at the expense of a more power engine as well as LED headlights.
