Overall Rating

The C27 Nissan Serena S-Hybrid, for what it's worth, is an incredibly well-thought-out MPV for the family. It is sufficiently powerful to ferry seven adults in sheer comfort, and the cabin is littered with seven powered USB ports for everyone's peace of mind. Other improved aspects of the car include a better sprung suspension, more refined and efficient powertrain, quieter cabin and the inclusion of six airbags and ESC, both of which are mandatory in this day and age.

For
  • Super comfortable seats
  • Premium-feeling cabin
  • Exceptional features for driver and passengers
  • Powertrain is more refined
Against
  • Still uses old-school foot parking brake
  • Car still feels slightly underpowered on full load
Performance

Powered by the same 2.0 litre direct injection engine from before, the Serena remains as a comfortable people carrier rather than an all-out chariot for VIPS. It's tuned to be more fuel efficient this time around, and the CVT feels smooth and evidently more refined than the C26 model it replaces. There’s no pure EV mode, but at least there's some torque assist to get moving from a standstill, which is usually the time when you use the most fuel.

Ride & Handling

Frankly speaking, the Serena S-Hybrid is not the sort of car you'd explicitly pick out to hunt corners. As an MPV that doesn't pretend to be anything otherwise, the Serena exhibits considerable body roll when too much speed is carried into the bends, albeit lesser than that found on the old car.

Comfort

Comfort is easily one of its strongest suits. Thanks to an improved suspension setup, as well as more liberal use of sound absorbing material, the cabin proves to be a joy to be in for all occasions. As a bonus, the seven-seat configuration means the middle row gets captain chairs, and it comes complete with Nissan’s Zero Gravity technology.

Safety

Safety-wise, six airbags is now standard for all variants on sale, which is a laudable improvement from the dual airbag offering in the older car. Also fitted now are electronic stability control and two Isofix mounts for the middle row, although there are none for the last row.

Space

Again, the Serena's tall body, high roofline and low entry point make the cabin feel particularly spacious. Young children and more elderly people will find it relatively easy to get in and out of the rear space, and the use of automatic doors is simply icing on a cake.

Value

Priced from RM132k to RM144k, it's hard to look past the Serena's value proposition. If you're considering to get a comfortable, spacious MPV for the family, Nissan has just the right one for you, for the right price as well. Oh, if you wish to keep the kids entertained on long drives, the Premium Highway Star comes with a roof-mounted 10.1-inch monitor. What more does one need?
