Perodua Myvi D51A (2021-Present) Expert Review
8 April 2022
Overall Rating
The Myvi already does most things well for most people. It didn't need technical updates, but Perodua went on and replaced the gearbox - the D-CVT ups efficiency and cruising refinement. Safety - already unchallenged in its price bracket (and beyond) - is now at Level 2 ADAS, and ASA is available on all variants. As a starter car or affordable daily tool, the Myvi is a no-brainer.
Performance
The Myvi didn't get its "king" nickname for being slow, and the CVT makes acceleration significantly more effortless. With a super low cruising RPM and improved FC, the new gearbox is a game changer for the model.
Ride & Handling
Driving pleasure has never been a Myvi strong point; - it's the only area that Proton's Iriz is superior, and by some margin too. Adequate for its intended purpose and target market, but if driving is life, look elsewhere.
Comfort
The ride is not uncomfortable, but damping is less sophisticated than in Proton's B-segment cars. The CVT brings lower engine noise levels, but rolling refinement is not great - you'll definitely hear water splashing against the wheel wells when it rains.
Safety
Safety was already unchallenged in its price bracket (and even in the sub-RM100k space), but Perodua went on and made ASA available on all variants. The Ativa AV's suite of ADAS is now available, with only the Adaptive LEDs missing out. Top safety for the masses - others really need to buck up now.
Space
Space and practicality are among the reasons why the Myvi is so popular. G3 is no longer excessive with headroom, but it's enough. Legroom is good, better than the Ativa even. Plenty of pockets and storage ideas.
Value
Prices are up slightly, but you get a lot more for the money as well, and much of the facelift's improvements are technical and safety-related. The Myvi has always been good value, which is why it's so popular, and the price-content ratio is now better.
