Peugeot 508 Mk1 (2012-Present) Expert Review
20 May 2014
Overall Rating
This Peugeot is a likeable one, and small gripes aside, is largely pleasant to drive and live with - more flair than a VW Passat with a much better cabin that the Ford Mondeo. Even the entry Turbo S variant retains enough of the charm. We like the HDi GT for its engine, but not the "sporty" additions.
Performance
Downsized 1.6 turbo engine has adequate torque to move the big car - nothing exciting, though. Auto gearbox is miles better than Peugeot's old 4AT in terms of shift speed and perceptiveness, but can sometimes hold on to gears for too long. HDi's great pulling power will surprise many.
Ride & Handling
The Turbo S, with its 17-inch wheels, has the best ride and handling balance for this writer. HDi GT's ride on 19s isn't calm enough for what is otherwise a big comfy exec. Steering isn't hyperactive, or too inert, and 508 is largely composed and stable. Not the most fleet footed, but pleasing enough.
Comfort
Never as silent as a Camry, but par for the Euro course. Diesel lump is "outnoised" by the HDi's fat tyres, so engine refinement is not an issue. Front seats are very adjustable and supportive. Decent ergonomics, but i-Drive style system isn't the most intuitive.
Safety
Everything you need and want is here - five-star Euro NCAP result, six airbags, ESP, ISOFIX are standard. This writer appreciated the 508's front parking sensors and bending lights.
Space
Jump in from a 3 Series/C-Class and the 508 will feel like a limo, but we're not talking about Accord levels of rear legroom here. Very few rear occupants will complain (manual window shades, rear AC vents available), but lack of cubbies up front is a big oversight.
Value
The 508 is the cheapest European D-segment sedan in Malaysia, but there's nothing cheap about the presentation, or the kit list, even on the entry Turbo S. At the time of review, the HDi GT has no direct rivals.
